Mitch Tuchman: A big part of our service is an ‘annual check-up’- we call it stay balanced. We find that if we help someone get their investment mix right and get on the right path, after a year things change. Markets ebbs and flow, people leave jobs, people’s situation changes. We had a client who had barely enough money to grow for a nice retirement and therefore we had to make a decision to help that client and make their account a little bit more conservative than we otherwise would have wanted to but the client was just a very nervous person.
We did a yearly check up and in that check up we learned that the client had just inherited a little bit of money, and that little bit of money made the client a lot more relaxed and it allowed us to make the portfolio a little bit more aggressive. Because of that we were able to add value a year later.
So we never know if there’s going to be an important event and the client doesn’t know either, but just by sitting down once a year and getting caught up, revisiting old assumptions, we find that we can make different decisions and help a client stay on the right path.
